It's Thursday
What Can You Do? Do What You Can!
Good afternoon,
My apologies for not getting anything out last Thursday. I just can't write anything that doesn't mean anything to me. And at that time, nothing came to me to share. However, it's Thursday.
I recently had a birthday and I've been thinking, will anything really change? While at the same time being quite aware that things have changed, are changing and will continue to change, that's life.
It seems that throughout history mankind has continued to play this game called divide and conquer. This has been a devasting game. This has never really worked for the long run, and it really cannot benefit anyone, despite the appearances. This way of thinking keeps us pitted against one another when there's more than enough to go around for everyone.
From time immemorial, human beings have been so terrible to human beings. And it continues even now. It's hard sometimes not to be angry, disappointed, saddened, and maybe in some cases, feel hopeless.
Over the years I have been called an eternal optimist, Pollyanna, or that I’m not in touch with the reality of what’s going on in the world. Au Contraire, I am very aware of what’s happening in the city, state, country the world. I am so aware that it hurts my heart to see just how far we have fallen as human beings when it comes to being kind to one another. And I will even admit that there are times when I feel like what’s the use? What’s the use of me doing the work I know I am meant to do? Now, this is not my first time feeling this. It has happened before.
A number of years ago, while living in Denver, CO, I was on my way home from a play rehearsal. It was winter, close to Christmas, snowy and very cold. To get to the freeway I had to drive past one of the Missions. What I saw broke my heart. So many people with no place to go, and in 15 degree weather. There were men, women in children. I was so depressed about that for that Christmas Holiday, as well as for the next 2 years. I found myself in this “Blue Funk”.
I kept asking myself, “Eugene, what good are you really providing to the people with all the affirmations you write for the Science of Mind magazine? How are the Daily Guides helping the world, really? Am I really helping the world by seeing clients, teaching classes and giving Sunday talks?” It took me a while to come to the answer, and the answer was and still is, Yes. Dagnabit, what I do does make a difference. What I do does help others get through this seeming quagmire of bullshit we seem to keep finding ourselves in. What can I do? Do what I can.
I had a ‘seasoned’ licensed Spiritual Practitioner ask me a few years ago why I thought God was allowing all this war to continue? Afterall, there was more than what was going on in Gaza. There is conflict in Sudan, Eastern Congo, Russia/Ukraine, Haiti, and more. Shucks, we really don’t have to look outside our own borders to experience battles. We may not have actual bombs falling on our cities. However, there seems to be so much strife and separation even here at home, a consistent battle.
The answer I gave the Practitioner was this. There is no god ‘out there’ that is allowing any of this to go on. There never has been. Check this out. Pick a war, currently or in history. There were and are people on both sides praying for god to grant them victory. Both sides pray that their loved ones return home safely. What is this god supposed to do now? Pick one over the other. If so, based on what? If my side wins, that god has deemed our side deserving and the other side not. If my side loses, then what kind of god would allow my love ones to be killed. Excuse my language, but this shit is on us. All of us.
The truth is that it has always been up to us. There is no god out there that is going to come down from the skies and save humanity. Neither is there a devil that has taken control. We are the ones. We are the ones who have the power to turn this run-away train around. And it is going to take all of us to do it. What can you do? Do what you can.
I have been speaking about the great I Am for years now. The power to change your life is right where your I Am is. All of the spiritual teachings from around, though distorted over time, taught that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the ones with the power to change our lives individually and collectively. How do we do this, you ask? First, by recognizing that you are here on purpose. That purpose is to serve in some way.
You ever notice that whenever a disaster hits us here at home, that people drop the thoughts of separation and lend a helping hand by doing what they can. We human beings are truly remarkable.
Ladies and gentlemen, I admit, sometimes my heart just breaks, seeing and hearing about how we as human beings treat each other. I mean, WTF. I, however, will not allow any of this to keep me from showing up to do what I can to serve my Purpose. My Purpose is to basically remind us of our Divinity. Our specialness. Our depth of creativity. Our passion for this thing called life. It is my Purpose to be a reminder that we are better, so much better that what appears to be going on.
Don’t let the news distract you from being and doing you. What can you do? Do what you can. Strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know. Greet people the way you would like to be greeted. Share your gifts. Share your joy with folks. And yes, even share your heart ache with someone. Not from a place of vindictiveness or being a victim, but from a place of the hurt you feel from witnessing how we as people, treat we as people. And also, from the willingness to be about the healing. For example. “This stuff with ICE hurts my heart. These poor families. What can I do? Let me do what I can”. Allow your pain to be your guide to healing.
Don’t get distracted by all that is going on, and there is a lot going on. We mustn’t allow ourselves to be distracted from what we came here to be and do. You are here to be a healing presence in the world. Here’s what’s cool about that. You get to decide how you want to show up. There is no entity outside of you that you have to ask permission from. There’s nothing outside of you that can tell you how to be you. And who you are is a Divine Being of Light.
Share that light with the people in your world. Laugh, cry, dance, sing, love, forgive. Simply be who you came here to be.
What can you do? Do what you can. The world needs you to be you in a great big way. Even if that great big way is a simple smile.
Be Blessed. Be You, Eugene

Great article, Eugene. It reminds me of a conversation I had recently with another coach/consultant about why we do what we do. That turned to discussing the difference between working viral or vital, or both. Michelle and I continued that conversation. It would be great to have that conversation with you. And one other thing, I relate very well to people who use the term ‘dagnabit.’ Thank you for writing this.
